Throughout the film, one of the main actors is interviewed several times with a bird sitting on her shoulder. A sheet was strung up to separate the interview space from the rest of the living room. Prior to shooting was set to begin, the trainer carried both birds into the house in one custom-made bird carrier and they kept the birds in the back bedroom until needed. When called to set the trainer took the bird out of the carrier and carried him to set in her hands. The bird had been introduced to the actress on a previous day. The trainer and bird owner showed the actress how to safely handle the bird. The bird was at liberty and not asked to perform any specific action other than staying on the actress's shoulder. The trainer and bird owner positioned themselves just behind the curtain so that they could hear what was going on. The raised voice did not bother the bird and never looked frightened. The actress was very gentle when she handled the bird.

In the scene where the father shows his little girl how to shoot a gun and she shoots a rabbit in the woods, the rabbit was filmed standing on mark and looking around as young Tonya aimed a child-size rifle at him from 25 feet away and took a shot. The live rabbit was then removed and replaced by a taxidermy rabbit to film the footage in which the rabbit was shot. A taxidermy rabbit provided by the property department was then placed on the same mark and was filmed being jerked backward by a crew member using a piece of fishing line as if the rabbit had been shot. The taxidermy rabbit was then fitted with a squib with blood. There were several takes filmed of the squib blowing up inside the skin of the taxidermy rabbit with blood released
